last friday i got rid of my Escort sedan, which i had been getting increasingly annoyed at because you couldnt really carry anything large in it. Where "large" could be just my bicycle, let alone a washing machine. My previous Escort was the hatchback, which you could stuff an amazing amount of stuff into.
I was looking to possibly get a used Focus, Saturn, or equivalent wagon, 2-3 years old, or perhaps one of those toyota matrix style hatchbacks they are making now. Couldn't find any of those at a reasonable price. Wanting a standard transmission really cuts down on the available offerings. I ended up deciding to buy a new car, something i've never done before. And it's got to be the ugliest darn thing out there. It's so ugly and square that its cute, in a way.
Yep, i bought a Scion xB. Here's a photo of one.
It's a small rectangular prism on wheels, built on top of the Toyota Echo chassis. It's incredibly roomy inside. It does this by sacrificing how much cargo room you get behind the back seat. Not too much. But the rear seats split 60/40, and if you put both of them down you can stuff a huge amount into this beast. Or you can take them out entirely for even more space. It's shorter than my escort sedan was and has a better turning radius and gas mileage as well.
Mini Review Based on 2 days ownership:
Pros: roomy inside. Damn cheap for a new vehicle. standard included radio is a pioneer cd player that groks MP3s. (this means i can avoid the usual kundalini yoga session needed to install an aftermarket stereo). Large cargo capacity if seats folded down. Excellent mileage for something that can actullly carry things. (30/35 claimed. we'll see what i actually get) Handling is decent. Wheels look tiny against the body but are actually 15 inch rims (== more tire options), Quieter that my escort.
Cons: Somewhat underpowered. drivers rear view could be vastly better; side mirrors essential. Some of the silver trim on the stickshift causes annoying reflections off of the windshield when the sun is in certain places. (will be fixed by painting it black R.S.N) Looks like someone ran out of cows, and tipped over a Kenmore washing machine.
