frobzwiththingzAs reported earlier in this entry, as of last friday afternoon we are now the caretakers of a 20-inch or so garter snake.
Last night, after getting home from aerial silks practice, we set up Snake Habitat V 2.0, version 1 having been determined to be not very good after STFW-ing. Before we transferred Garth R. Snake into the new abode, we figured that we would see if it would eat anything. It showed no interest in either form of mealworm (insect larvae of various types), or the nightcrawler earthworm, the most likely preferred food for it according to all the herpetology pages i had read.
So we tried to transfer it into the new environment, but it was having none of that and was somewhat hard to get it out. We did eventually herd it into a pyrex measuring cup and get it into the new setup. Well, it's certainly in much better shape than when we originally picked it up; energetic and feisty. Thats good. We put a small bowl containing a mealworm and a waterlogged mushroom (just to keep the mealworm from drying out) into the cage. Snake ignored it, but seemed interested in exploring the rest of the environs.

klingonlandlady and i stayed up for another 45 minutes watching "Snake TV".
This morning Snake seemed to be doing something that looked sort of like hunting behavior; it was exploring the soaking pool, poking its head around and smelling the water surface.klingonlandlady thought that maybe it was looking for fish, and perhaps it had decided that it wanted something to munch on. We stuck an earthworm in the center of the cage, and about 5 minutes later Snake had found it and chomped it down. Success! OK, we now know that it will eat nightcrawlers. We'll try out some small feeder guppies soon, and see if it was really looking for fish in the water.
The whole project seems less futile now. "Snake TV" is oddly satisfying, even though not much ever really happens.
