I just saw what i think is the best science fiction film i've seen in years. And it required virtually *no* special effects at all. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Unsurprisingly, I was going to say the same thing. :)

Primer required neither special effects nor, apparently, budget! It was made on $7000 or some such. Totally worth seeing.

It certainly is SF. I mostly found myself thinking that it's one of very few films I've seen where I found the primary romance compelling. Definitely on my short list of favorite films.
